Akron. They stipulated that the 79 acres be used for “…the sole purpose of devoting the same to the uses of a public park, especially as a place for recreation for children.” Two brown bears were donated and a facility appropriate for the era was built in the park.
In 1950, a small museum of Natural History was also incorporated. In 1953, the founding fathers expanded the museum to include the 24-acre Akron Children’s Zoo, a menagerie of Mother Goose themes. The zoo flourished during the 50’s and 60’s.
